A tiled wall can look clean on installation day, but grout lines soon become the part of the room that demands the most attention. So, do hygienic panels need grout? Do hygienic panels need grout in wet areas?

No, even in wet areas, hygienic panels do not require grout. In fact, grout is not the right material for PVC sheet joints. It is rigid, porous and intended for use between tiles. Hygienic wall cladding works as a system: sheets are fixed to a suitable substrate, edges are brought together with the correct joining trim or overlap detail, and joints are sealed where required.

A properly fitted panel system forms a durable, wipe-clean wall surface. In showers, bathrooms, washrooms and commercial wash-down areas, the quality of the seal is what matters. What is used between hygienic panels instead?

A two-part H section or joining trim is commonly used to create a neat connection between adjacent sheets. Internal corner trims finish corners cleanly, while external corner trims protect exposed edges from knocks in high-traffic areas. End caps and starter trims give visible sheet edges a professional finish.

For hygiene-sensitive or wet locations, sealant is applied carefully at the relevant interfaces. This may include the perimeter of the wall, joints within trims, floor transitions, ceiling edges and areas around pipework. A continuous seal is particularly important where water could otherwise travel behind the cladding.

Using matching trims is not only about appearance. They help maintain even spacing, protect sheet edges and create a more consistent installation. Buying panels, trims, adhesive and sealant as a complete system also avoids the delays and compatibility issues that can arise when products are sourced separately.

Sealant is not a substitute for sound installation

Silicone sealant is essential for waterproof finishing, but it cannot correct a poorly prepared wall or a badly aligned panel. The substrate must be clean, dry, sound and as flat as possible before fitting begins. Loose paint, flaking surfaces, active damp and major unevenness should be dealt with first.

Panels should be allowed to acclimatise in the installation area before fitting, particularly when they have been delivered in cold weather. This helps reduce the chance of unnecessary movement after installation. Adhesive should be applied in line with the product guidance, and sheets should be pressed firmly into position before trims and sealant are fitted.

In demanding areas, small details make a major difference. Seal around service openings, use suitable closures at exposed edges and make sure the panel-to-floor junction is properly finished. If a wall is regularly exposed to direct water, such as inside a shower enclosure, take extra care to create a continuous watertight seal at every junction.

When can hygienic panel joints be left unsealed?

It depends on the location. In a dry, low-risk area, such as a protected wall in a corridor, retail back room or domestic staircase, a trim-only joint may be suitable where the installation system allows it. The panels will still provide a durable, easy-clean surface, and the trim will keep the join tidy.

However, where hygiene or moisture control is a priority, sealing is usually the sensible option. Commercial kitchens, food rooms, bathrooms, changing areas, clinical spaces and utility areas are all places where a sealed finish offers better protection. It prevents dirt and water from reaching the substrate and supports a surface that is easier to maintain.

The same principle applies behind sinks and worktops. Even if the wider room is dry, splashing and routine cleaning can expose lower wall sections to moisture. A correctly sealed bottom edge and perimeter help protect the wall behind the panel.

Grout-free does not mean maintenance-free

PVC hygienic wall cladding significantly reduces maintenance compared with tiled walls, but it still benefits from routine care. Wipe the surface with a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge and an appropriate cleaning product. Avoid harsh scouring pads and abrasive cleaners that could dull a gloss finish over time.

Sealant should also be checked periodically, especially in showers and heavily used commercial wet areas. If sealant becomes damaged, separates from an edge or shows signs of wear, remove and replace it promptly. This is far simpler than dealing with water ingress behind a wall lining.

A well-maintained cladding system retains the practical benefits buyers expect: a waterproof surface, resistance to stains, mould and bacteria, and a clean finish without the visual interruption of grout lines. The panel material may be similar, but the installation detail should reflect the environment.
