A panel installation can look excellent across the main wall and still fall short at the perimeter. Knowing how to finish panel edges properly is what gives PVC wall cladding its clean, sealed appearance and helps keep moisture, dirt and bacteria out of vulnerable gaps. The right trim and sealant turn cut sheet edges into a durable, easy-clean finish suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms and commercial hygiene areas.

Why finishing panel edges matters

PVC hygienic wall cladding is designed to replace grout lines and porous wall finishes with a smooth, wipe-clean surface. But every installation has exposed edges: where a wall ends, where panels meet an internal or external corner, around windows, and where cladding meets a floor, ceiling or worktop.

Leaving these edges exposed can spoil the appearance of the job and create a place for water or cleaning residue to collect. In wet rooms and busy commercial spaces, that can lead to staining, mould growth behind the sheet or a breakdown in the bond over time. A properly selected trim covers the cut edge, while a neat bead of suitable sealant closes the final gap.

It is a small part of the installation, but it has a major effect on hygiene, durability and the overall finish.

Choose the right trim for each panel edge

There is no single trim for every edge. The correct choice depends on where the panel finishes and whether the area is likely to get wet. Before cutting or bonding any sheets, identify every edge condition across the room. This avoids last-minute joins, mismatched trims and unnecessary waste.

End caps for exposed panel edges

An end cap, often called a finishing trim, is used where the cladding stops on an open wall edge. It wraps around the edge of the PVC sheet to create a straight, protected border.

This is commonly used beside a doorway, at the end of a splashback, around a partial-height wall or where cladding meets a painted surface. Select a trim that matches the sheet thickness, so the panel fits securely without rattling or being forced into place. A tight fit gives the smartest result, but there must still be enough room to accommodate normal material movement.

Internal corner trims

Internal corner trims are fitted where two walls meet at an inward corner. They cover both panel edges and create a consistent, easy-clean transition rather than relying on a heavy line of sealant alone.

For most kitchens, bathrooms and hygiene-sensitive spaces, an internal corner trim is the practical choice. It gives a cleaner line, protects cut edges and makes the corner easier to maintain. Seal the trim correctly, particularly in shower areas, behind sinks and around food preparation zones.

External corner trims

External corners take more knocks than almost any other part of a wall. Doorways, corridors, changing areas and service rooms are especially vulnerable to impacts from trolleys, equipment and daily footfall.

An external corner trim protects the projecting edges of the sheets and gives the corner a crisp, uniform profile. Do not rely on two panel edges meeting neatly on an external corner. Even a careful cut is likely to be exposed to damage, and the edge will be harder to clean.

Joint trims and connection profiles

Where a wall is longer or taller than one sheet, a joint trim can cover the meeting point between panels. This is useful where a butt joint is not appropriate or where you want a visible, controlled junction.

For a more continuous appearance, some installations use close butt joints with a suitable sealant. This can work well when sheets are accurately cut, the wall is flat and the installation method supports it. However, joint trims offer more tolerance for minor variation and can be the more dependable option on larger projects.

Prepare the panels and wall before fitting trims

A clean edge starts before the trim goes on. Cut panels accurately with the appropriate blade, support the sheet well and remove any rough burrs from the cut. A ragged edge can stop the trim seating correctly and may show through lighter-coloured profiles.

The wall surface should be sound, dry, clean and reasonably flat. Remove loose paint, dust, grease and failed sealant before starting. Adhesive can only perform as well as the surface beneath it, so taking shortcuts here risks panels or trims lifting later.

Dry-fit each panel and trim before applying adhesive. This is particularly useful around door frames, windows and awkward corners, where a few millimetres can make the difference between a professional finish and a visible gap. Mark cut lines clearly and check the trim orientation before cutting it to length.

Allow for small expansion gaps where recommended by the panel and trim system. PVC can move slightly as temperatures change. If panels are fitted too tightly between rigid surfaces, they may bow or put pressure on trims over time.

How to finish panel edges step by step

Start by deciding the order of installation. In most cases, fit the relevant corner or edge trims as part of the panel installation, not as an afterthought. This allows the sheet to slide into the profile cleanly and ensures the trim is properly supported.

Apply the recommended panel adhesive to the back of the sheet using the stated application pattern. Position the panel carefully, pressing it firmly onto the wall from the centre outwards to remove air pockets. Avoid smearing adhesive into the trim channel, as excess adhesive can prevent the panel edge from seating fully.

Once the panel is in position, guide the cut edge into the trim. Do not hammer or force it. If it will not enter the channel smoothly, check for adhesive build-up, an oversized cut edge or a trim that is not square to the wall.

At corners, make sure both panels sit evenly within the profile. The visible faces should be level, with no proud edges that could catch cleaning cloths or collect dirt. Use a straightedge across adjoining panels if necessary.

After the trims and sheets are secure, apply a neat, continuous bead of sanitary-grade sealant at wet-area perimeters and wherever the system requires it. This normally includes the junction between cladding and shower trays, baths, worktops, sinks, floors, ceilings and window reveals. Smooth the bead promptly with a sealant profiling tool or a lightly moistened finger, then remove excess before it skins over.

The goal is not the largest possible bead. An oversized sealant line can look untidy and becomes harder to clean. Use enough sealant to bridge and seal the joint, with a smooth finish that sheds water rather than holding it.

Pay extra attention to wet areas

Bathrooms, shower rooms and commercial wash areas need more careful edge treatment than a dry corridor or office wall. Water naturally tracks down panels and finds horizontal junctions, especially around shower trays, baths and basins.

Seal these areas continuously. Do not leave tiny breaks at trim joins, around pipe penetrations or behind fittings. Where two trim lengths meet, cut them squarely and seal the join so water cannot work behind the profile.

It is also worth considering the condition of the substrate. PVC sheets and trims provide a waterproof face, but they are not a substitute for resolving an existing leak, unstable wall or failed shower tray seal. Fix those issues first, then install the cladding system over a suitable background.

Common edge-finishing mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is treating trims as decorative extras. They are functional parts of the cladding system, protecting sheet edges and helping create a hygienic, sealed surface. Ordering panels without the correct trims often causes delays once fitting has started.

Another issue is using a general-purpose sealant where a sanitary, mould-resistant product is needed. Choose a sealant suited to wet areas and compatible with PVC cladding. Always allow it to cure for the stated period before exposing the area to water or intensive cleaning.

Poor measurement is equally costly. Measure every wall edge separately, including returns and recesses, rather than assuming opposite sides of a room are identical. Order a sensible allowance for cuts and joins, especially on large commercial fit-outs where consistency matters.

Finally, avoid installing trims over dirty or damp surfaces. Sealant may appear to bond at first, but poor preparation can lead to peeling edges and difficult remedial work later.
