Guide to Hygienic Sheet Sizes for Every Space

A wall cladding job can look straightforward until the first sheet is offered up around a doorway, service pipe or uneven corner. This guide to hygienic sheet sizes explains how to choose panels that suit the room, minimise joins and waste, and leave enough allowance for the trims and movement gaps that create a clean, sealed finish.

Why sheet size matters in hygienic spaces

PVC hygienic wall cladding is designed to create a smooth, waterproof, grout-free surface that is easy to wipe down. The fewer unnecessary joints you introduce, the fewer areas there are to seal and maintain. That makes sheet planning particularly relevant in commercial kitchens, food preparation rooms, washrooms, healthcare settings and busy domestic bathrooms.

Large panels cover an area quickly and can make a compact room feel more uniform. They are also practical where speed matters, such as a refurbishment between shifts or before a premises reopens. However, a larger sheet can be less convenient to handle in a tight staircase, small lift or confined room. The right size is therefore not simply the biggest panel available. It is the panel that gives you efficient coverage while remaining practical to deliver, carry, cut and fit.

Most hygienic PVC wall sheets are supplied in broad-format panels, commonly around 1220mm wide, with different lengths available to suit typical wall heights. Always check the current product specification before ordering, as dimensions, thicknesses and finishes can vary by range.

Guide to hygienic sheet sizes: start with the wall

Measure every wall separately, even when two walls appear identical. Older buildings, extensions and rooms with boxed-in services often have small variations that matter once sheets are being cut. Take the width at the top, middle and bottom of each wall, then work from the largest measurement. For height, measure at both ends and in the centre.

Do not measure only the clear wall area and assume trims can be added later. Internal corners, external corners, edge trims, division bars and capping pieces all take up space. Their exact allowance depends on the profile used and how it is fitted. A neat installation begins with a clear layout, not with trying to make a final offcut work around the last corner.

For a wall that is 3.6 metres wide, two 1220mm-wide sheets cover 2.44 metres. The remaining 1.16 metres will need a third panel cut to width. In this case, order three sheets for that wall, then decide where the cut sheet will look most natural. It is often best placed in a less prominent area, behind equipment or on the return near a corner, rather than centred on the main wall.

Allow for height and ceiling details

Choose a sheet length that exceeds the finished wall height, allowing for trimming at the top and bottom. If a room is 2.35 metres high and the sheet is 2.44 metres long, the spare material gives useful tolerance for a floor that is not level or a ceiling that dips slightly.

Where the wall cladding meets a suspended ceiling, ceiling cladding or a tiled floor, plan the transition before cutting. Capping trims provide a finished top edge, while skirting or sealing details protect the bottom edge from water ingress and repeated cleaning. In wet areas, the sealant line is part of the hygiene system, not a cosmetic afterthought.

Standard panels versus made-to-fit cuts

Standard-size hygienic sheets are usually the most cost-effective choice for both trade and domestic projects. They are readily available, easier to price and suitable for cutting on site to suit doors, sockets, windows and service penetrations. For a typical kitchen, utility room or bathroom, standard panels give the flexibility needed to work around real-world dimensions.

Buying pre-cut sheets can reduce cutting time, but only when site measurements are final and accurate. On a new build or a refurbishment where substrates are still being adjusted, a pre-cut panel leaves less room for correction. A full sheet with sensible trimming allowance is often the safer option.

Thickness also matters. A premium PVC wall panel must be rigid enough to give a durable finish while still being workable with normal fitting tools. Thicker material can feel more substantial and may be preferable for demanding commercial settings, but it can also affect trim compatibility and cutting technique. Keep all components within the same system wherever possible.

Plan the layout before you order

A simple scaled sketch prevents many costly mistakes. Mark wall widths and heights, then add door openings, windows, radiators, sockets, pipework and fixed equipment. Next, draw the likely sheet positions using the panel width specified for your chosen range.

Think about the most visible wall first. A full-width sheet looks better than a narrow strip at eye level, so move joins towards corners where practical. In rooms with a feature colour or gloss finish, panel positioning becomes even more noticeable because reflected light can highlight an uneven joint.

When planning a whole room, account for the following items as part of the order:

  • wall sheets, including a sensible cutting allowance;

  • matching internal and external corner trims;

  • joint trims or weld options where required;

  • edge, capping and skirting trims;

Using matched trims and adhesives helps create a consistent, waterproof finish. It also avoids delays caused by discovering halfway through the installation that a corner profile is the wrong depth for the selected sheet.

How much extra material should you allow?

For straightforward, square walls with few obstructions, allowing around 5 to 10 per cent extra material is often sensible. For rooms with multiple doors, windows, boxed-in pipes or angled ceilings, increase that allowance. The offcuts created around a window may be too narrow or irregular to reuse elsewhere.

There is a balance to strike. Ordering too little can hold up a project, particularly if the finish needs to match an existing batch. Ordering far too much increases cost and leaves bulky waste to manage. Count sheets wall by wall rather than dividing the total room area by the sheet area. Area calculations are useful as a check, but they do not show where cuts and joins will fall.

Consider handling, access and installation conditions

A long, wide PVC sheet is far easier to fit with two people. Before delivery, check the route from the vehicle to the installation area. Measure stairwells, corridors, turns, doors and lift openings. A panel that fits the wall perfectly is of little use if it cannot get through the building safely.

Store sheets flat on a clean, dry, level surface and allow them to acclimatise to the room temperature before fitting. This is especially worthwhile when panels have arrived from a cold delivery vehicle and are being installed in a warm kitchen or bathroom. PVC can expand and contract slightly with temperature changes, so follow the fitting guidance for expansion gaps and sealant use.

The wall behind the sheets must also be sound, dry and suitably prepared. Hygienic cladding can cover tired tiles, plasterboard and other common surfaces when they are secure and properly cleaned, but it cannot correct a loose, damp or severely uneven substrate. Adhesive needs reliable contact across the wall for a lasting result.

Sheet size choices for common rooms

In a small domestic bathroom, a panel length that reaches from floor to ceiling can reduce horizontal joins and simplify cleaning. The challenge is usually working around sanitaryware, windows and pipework. Measure carefully and make cut-outs gradually, rather than cutting to a line in one attempt.

For commercial kitchens and food preparation areas, broad sheets are useful for creating long, easy-clean wall runs behind worktops, sinks and equipment. Choose sheet lengths that limit horizontal joints around splash zones. Where equipment is fixed close to the wall, plan access for fitting and sealing before installation begins.

In corridors, utility rooms and back-of-house spaces, the priority may be speed and impact resistance rather than a completely uninterrupted finish. Standard sheet widths, properly joined and sealed, provide durable coverage without the cleaning burden of grout lines. For high-traffic corners, use suitable external corner trims to protect the panel edge from knocks.

Make the final order work harder

Before placing the order, review the drawing against the product dimensions one last time. Confirm the finish, number of sheets, trim types, adhesive coverage and sealant quantity. If the project includes several rooms, label the required panels by room so that the fitting sequence is clear when materials arrive.

The best sheet plan is rarely the one with the fewest panels on paper. It is the one that gives clean lines, manageable cuts, sealed edges and enough material to complete the job without interruption. Get those details right at the measuring stage, and the finished walls will be easier to install, easier to clean and ready for the demands of daily use.
